Running projects

The on-going projects are based on the most recent satellite images.
Each project is designed with a short introduction, needed background information, exercises and external links.

Harbours en route

The expedition will visit harbours at very different locations around the globe. Take a look of harbour from space. The newest satellite images of the harbour towns will be compared with archived data such that the urban development can be analysed.

Sea temperature

The ocean temperature has great importance in the ocean ecosystem. Envisat and other satellites observe daily sea surface temperature. Compare the present situation with the average image. Is an El Nino situation coming?

Phytoplankton seen from space

Flourishing of algae in the ocean is a natural part of life in the ocean and is the basis for the ocean ecosystem. In some areas the disposal of wastewater from agriculture, industry and urban area give severe and harmful algae events. Monitor the situation using satellite images from Envisat and compare with ship observations.

Wind

The wind over the ocean is very variable around the world. From the radar instrument ASAR onboard the environmental satellite Envisat we can map the fine details of the ocean wind. Investigate the wind along the Galathea 3 cruise track. Compare the images with observations from the ship.

Radar eye on Galathea 3

In radar images from Envisat it is possible to analyse the sea surface. It is possible to distinguish calm and stormy seas. It is clear to see various ice conditions. Who will find the first oil spill from a ship? Can we help the captain though the sea ice near Antarctica?

What is the weather like?

Galathea 3 will traverse all climate zones from north to south during the cruise. Keep an eye on the daily weather along the route with the help of satellite images and observations on-board. How does the this compare with the text in a geography book? Make your own 24-hour weather forecast.

Atmospheric pollution

The instrument SCIAMACHI is observing the atmospheric content of various compounds originating from industry and burning of fossil fuels. Find the most polluted centres on our globe. Compare the daily image with the mean values and observations from the ship.

The Gravity of the Earth and earthquakes

The gravity field of the Earth varies but can be mapped from satellite. In this small project you will learn how different types of active zones in the Earth crust can be mapped from satellite in order to understand why different Earthquakes strikes in different regions of the world.

Land use

When Galathea 3 is approaching the coastline, MERIS satellite images will be used to investigate vegetation and land use in general. How does the information in the images compare with your knowledge on the seasons and agriculture in the region? -->
